Damage to car and wall

A WALL was damaged by someone who wrote graffiti on it using a marker pen at the weekend, between Friday and Saturday, February 5 - 6. The wall is within a communal area between two houses on Laverock Road, Kirkwall.

A red Toyota Celica car was struck and damaged by an unknown vehicle on North End Road, Stromness, sometime between 7.10am and noon on Wednesday, February 3.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to call Kirkwall Police Station on Tel: 872241.


Body recovered from Scapa Flow wreck

THE remains of a male diver were recovered from a wreck in Scapa Flow on Monday.

Police say that a post mortem examination will take place in Inverness and a report on the circumstances will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in Kirkwall.


Jobs to go at Flotta terminal

UP to 20 jobs are to go at Flotta Oil Terminal as part of plans to secure the facility's long-term future, operator Talisman Energy (UK) has announced today, Monday.

The company confirmed in a statement that it has been reviewing the organisational structure at Flotta, and this has highlighted what it described as 'areas for potential operational and cost efficiencies which we are addressing through a reorganisation'.

Witness sought by police

POLICE are seeking three people who are thought to have witnessed an incident between two men in the Grainpark area of Kirkwall, between 2 - 3am on Wednesday, February 3.

Police enquiries have established that these persons walked along Ayre Road, Kirkwall in the direction of the Peedie Sea at this time.

Anyone with information about the incident, or who these three people are, is asked to contact Kirkwall Police Station on Tel: 872241.


Orkney beat Lossie 36-5 in scrappy cup tie

On a dull, overcast, and blustery afternoon Orkney played host to RAF Lossiemouth in the second round of the Scottish Hydro Regional Bowl Competition.

Despite the chill, a healthy crowd of spectators watched as Orkney ran out eventual winners 36-5, with tries from John Dearness, Willie Thomson, Phil Ross, John Tait, Marcus Guthrie, and Davy Leonard.

Farmer gives evidence in murder trial

A FARMER today claimed a murder accused told his alleged victim: "Your day is coming."

Thirty-seven-year-old George Parker said that 54-year-old Bob Rose told him he had been threatened by his love rival John Campbell.

Mr Parker was giving evidence at the High Court of Glasgow in the trial of Campbell, 59, and Stephen Crummack, 51, who deny murdering Mr Rose on Sanday on June 6 or 7, 2009 and burying his body in sand dunes.

ORFC back in cup action this weekend

Orkney rugby club are back in action this Saturday in the second round of the Scottish Hydro Regional Bowl Competition.

Although their opponents, RAF Lossiemouth, are in the league below it is not a game Orkney will be taking lightly, as Lossie are in fine form having won 11 of their 12 league games so far. The game will be played at Picky, kick-off 2pm.

Murder trial hears of fights

THE woman at the centre of an Orkney love triangle told a murder trial today, Thursday, how her two lovers came to blows on a couple of occasions.

Thirty-four-year-old Margaret Johnston said that murder accused John Campbell had thrown floor tiles at alleged murder victim Robert Rose.

She also claimed that police were called after Campbell, 59, threatened to shoot 54-year-old Mr Rose.

Plane diverted to Wick after smoke reported in cockpit

A PLANE which was flying between Kirkwall and Inverness this morning, Thursday, was diverted to Wick after smoke was reported inside the aircraft.

A spokesperson for Loganair said that crew reported smoke in the cockpit and cabin. The flight had previously been in Sumburgh before calling at Kirkwall.

Orkney's small businesses offered free help

A NEW service for Orkney's smaller workplaces is being launched in February with a lunchtime event, to be followed by free, optional training workshops.

The service provides free workplace visits, which will offer employers the opportunity to find out how to keep up to date with legislation and good practice in Health & Safety, and gain advice and help with any changes they may need to make.

It is provided through qualified and experienced advisors employed by the NHS as part of the national 'Healthy Working Lives' programme. The aim is to support and improve the health of the Scottish workforce as part of improving community wellbeing and strengthening the economy.
