Flower and Industrial Show winners

SILVERWARE: Some of the successful competitors at Orkney Horticultural and Industrial Association's two main events of the year - the County Flower Show in August and the Chrysanthemum, Dahlia and Industrial Show in September - received their trophies at a presentation ceremony at the St Magnus Centre in Kirkwall on Friday night. A number of prizewinners were unable to attend the trophy presentation event because of the wintry weather last Friday night. The prizes were presented by Glenda Sinclair of St Ola (fifth from left), who also gave a talk about plant growing and show preparation. MSPs call for solidarity to oppose ending of bull hire scheme

Labour Highlands and Islands MSP Rhoda Grant, together with colleagues Peter Peacock and David Stewart, has called for crofters to stand together, shoulder to shoulder in solidarity, to win a reversal of the SNP government's proposals to end the historic bull hire scheme, which improves the quality and price of cattle in the crofting counties.

MORE than 100 local farmers attended a meeting in Kirkwall on Monday night at which the Scottish Government's Assistant Chief Vet, Dr Mike Lamont, explained why it had been decided that Scotland should adopt a compulsory vaccination programme against bluetongue.
