Anger over ferry sailing times

11/03/2010 10:58:00

ANGER is mounting in Orkney over an order from the Scottish Government to Northlink to increase the sailing time from Aberdeen to Kirkwall.

The efficiency drive to save fuel and costs by using two engines instead of four, will add an extra hour-and-a-half to the voyage.

The announcement was made by the Scottish Government on Tuesday, with Orkney Islands Council unhappy it was not informed before the announcement was made to the press and public.

Council convener Stephen Hagan said that the ferry changes would not help the tourist industry in the county and was another example of Orkney being disadvantaged over the Western Isles which continue to see the benefits of cheaper ferry fares with the Road Equivalent Tarrif on their ferry routes.

A letter is due to be sent by OIC to the government about the lack of communication and also concerns over the issue of car parking charges at Kirkwall airport.
